The Phosphate Test Kit

There are several brands of phosphate testing kits available to test phosphate elimination at home. Most of these have been developed for testing aquarium water and can be found in the aquarium section of pet stores. These can give phosphate concentration readings when used for urine, if they are adapted properly to take the yellow color into account.

We have found the Hagen test kit the most applicable and economical for people measuring phosphate elimination. The Hagen kit contains materials for 75 tests.

Effects of Diet, Exercise

The test results are affected by food choices. For instance, someone drinking soda will show high phosphate readings in the absence of accumulated phosphates being released. If your drinking water is high in phosphates, or you are taking supplements with phosphates in them, the readings may be affected. As well, exercise can increase phosphate elimination.

Observing Trends

These kits are not FDA approved for diagnostic use, and we do not recommend them as a diagnostic tool. This means that a single reading is not significant, and the concentration the reading suggests may not be totally accurate. The actual value you get does not matter in comparison to anyone else. The kit shows you whether your own levels change.The kit is useful to observe general trends in your phosphate excretion by using it repeatedly.

By getting an indication of the pattern of your phosphate excretion, you can confirm that phosphate elimination is increasing while using the homeopathic remedies. The kit also helps in observing the effect of dosage changes, or tubules developing problems again. The kit's results can also help determine if the tubules are maintaining their role in phosphate elimination as people reintroduce taking herbal products.

Initial Readings

During the first phases of taking the homeopathic remedies, the liver and kidney tubule problems are being addressed, and usually one would not expect extra phosphates to be released. Once people start to take the kidney remedy, they begin slowly to observe increased phosphate elimination, or blue readings, with the test kit.

Usually the test does not record phosphate elimination until the phosphates begin to release from the body as a whole. For a few people, the tests will show phosphate release earlier, from the tubules and kidneys themselves. For this reason we suggest you use the test a few times before you begin taking the liver remedies, so that you can establish a "base line" for yourself.

It can take several weeks for readings to be consistently in the high range or above after beginning the Kidney Remedy. Until then, the readings may "bounce around" until they become consistent.

Repeating #1 Kidney Tubules

Once a consistent higher readings are established, an reading showing an abrupt downward change suggests that salicylic acid or another substance may once again be compromising the kidney tubules. In this case, repeating the #1 Kidney Tubule remedy will usually restore the higher phosphate excretion rate.

Frequency of Using the #2 Kidney Remedy

Once phosphate elimination is well established, the kit can also be used to determine the frequency for taking the Kidney Remedy. This is done by observing how long the test results will stay dark blue, indicating good phosphate excretion, after stopping the #2 Kidney Remedy. Once the blue becomes lighter, it is time to take another dose. By repeating this regularly, the interval between doses will stretch out until no more #2 Kidney Remedy is needed to maintain a high phosphate excretion level.

Calcium Phosphate Elimination

The kits measure phosphate eliminated through the urine. Usually, with the remedies or guaifenesin, people are releasing calcium phosphate rather than phosphate on its own. Calcium phosphate in not soluble in water, and so ordinarily would not be measured. With the Hagen kit, the addition of reagent #1 adds sulphuric acid to the solution in the test tube, and this dissociates the calcium from the phosphate, thus allowing the phosphates to be dissolved and measured. Thus, though we talk in terms of the kit measuring phosphate released, it is in fact also measuring calcium phosphate released.

Instructions for Use

A- Dilution

To use the Hagen test kit, dilute the urine sample with distilled water. To do this, use 10 drops urine, plus distilled water to the fill line. Then follow the instructions with the kit.

If your readings are low, repeat using 1 drop of urine plus distilled water to the fill line. If your urine has a large amount of phosphate, it can overwhelm the reagent used in the testing, and the test will only show a low reading - when in fact it is very high. This does not usually happen when a person first starts to measure if they measure before they have taken the homeopathics or guaifenesin. This second measurement using 1 drop will ensure that your readings are actually low when they are reading low.

To calculate your results in mg/l, multiply your result by 10 if you used 10 drops and multiply by 100 if you used 1 drop.

B - Using the Kit to check the Tubules

The kit helps in determining if the tubules are developing problems again after you have used the remedy Kidney Tubules #1 to open them.

If you find that there is a sudden drop in your test results once you have had consistently higher results on the Kidney Remedy, it is likely your tubules have become blocked again. In this case, stop the Kidney remedy (#2) and repeat the tubule remedy (#1) for 3 doses. Then resume the Kidney remedy(#2).

C -Using the Kit to determine the frequency of using Kidney Remedy #2

Once you have taken 10 doses of the kidney remedy (#2), you will likely have a pattern of regular blue readings. Once you have had 4 weeks of consistent blue readings, stop the kidney remedy and keep testing with the test kit. When your test results start to become less blue, take more doses of the kidney remedy (#2) until your high readings are restored. Repeat this procedure every so often as the length of time between needing doses will increase, until finally you do not need to take the remedy at all.

D- Using the Kit to Re-introduce herbal pills

After 3 weeks on the kidney remedy, you can begin to re-introduce herbs if you want to. Use the kit to be sure your phosphate elimination is staying at its usual levels when you re-introduce the herbal products. If the level drops drastically, stop the herbs and take #1 again for 3 doses to re-clear the tubules. Then resume the kidney remedy (#2) and see if your phosphate test results return to previous levels. If you find you needed to repeat #1, wait for another 4 weeks of taking the kidney remedy before trying again.
